Introducing New Members Advancing the ISBT 128 Standard Across Borders

ICCBBA is pleased to announce and welcome our three newest Board Members: Dr. Claudia Cohn, Dr. Aseem Tiwari, and Dr. Francisco Martinez Flores. Each begins a six-year term, succeeding retiring members Dr. Joy Mammen and Dr. Kelly Tilleman, whom we thank sincerely for their years of leadership and commitment to advancing the ISBT 128 Standard.
Meet the New Board Members
Dr. Francisco Martinez Flores is a distinguished biomedical researcher with expertise in gene and cell therapies, tissue transplantation, and molecular pharmacology. He earned his MD from the Statal University of Mexico (UAEM) and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the National University of Mexico (UNAM), with fellowship training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Dr. Martinez Flores founded the first Skin and Tissue Bank under Mexico’s Ministry of Health and currently leads the Skin and Tissue Bank at the National Institute of Rehabilitation of Mexico. He is also a professor of pharmacology at UNAM and serves as a member of the WHO Expert Group on Tissue Transplantation.
Dr. Claudia Cohn holds a PhD in Immunology and Infectious Diseases from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and an MD from Louisiana State University. She completed her Transfusion Medicine fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Cohn currently serves as the Medical Director of the Blood Bank Laboratory at the University of Minnesota, Chief Medical Officer of AABB, and Chair of the Advisory Committee on Blood and Tissue Safety and Availability for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Her academic interests include refractory platelet management, hemovigilance, and the appropriate use of blood components.
Dr. Aseem Tiwari is the Senior Director of the Department of Transfusion Medicine at Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon, India. A certified NABH Assessor and Transplant Coordinator for the U.S. National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), he also serves as Vice President of the Indian Society of Transfusion Medicine (ISTM). Dr. Tiwari has authored over 150 national and international publications and is a peer reviewer for multiple journals. His work has earned several prestigious accolades, including the H. D. Shourie Award (2009), the J. R. Jolly Award (2016), and the 2024 Mother Teresa Award from the Indian Society of Transfusion Medicine and Immunohematology (ISBTI).
About the ICCBBBA Board
ICCBBA is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors composed of global experts in blood transfusion, cellular therapy, and tissue transplantation. Board positions are filled through a public call for applications and currently include members from Mexico, India, the United States, Egypt, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Italy. Together, they help guide ICCBBA’s mission of improving patient safety through the ISBT 128 Standard.

About ICCBBA:
ICCBBA is the international standards organization responsible for the management and development of the ISBT 128 Standard.
The acronym ISBT was originally derived from the important role played by the International Society of Blood Transfusion in the development of the Standard. Today it expands as Information Standard for Blood and Transplantation. The number 128 reflects the 128 characters of the ISO/IEC 646 7-bit character set.
The acronym ICCBBA is derived from the International Council for Commonality in Blood Banking Automation.
