We are thrilled to announce the latest addition to the International Council for Commonality in Blood Banking Automation's (ICCBBA) esteemed Board of Directors: Dr. Jelena Holovati.
With an extensive background in laboratory medicine, stem cell manufacturing, and accreditation, Dr. Holovati brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our organization.
A Leader in Laboratory Medicine and Stem Cell Manufacturing
Dr. Holovati currently serves as a Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Alberta, Canada. In addition to her academic role, she holds the position of Laboratory Director for the Stem Cell Manufacturing Program at the Canadian Blood Services, overseeing operations in both Ottawa and Edmonton stem cell manufacturing centers. Her leadership extends further as she serves as a director of the Graduate Program at the University of Alberta and acts as a scientific consultant with the Alberta Health Services Tissue Transplant Program.
With a career spanning over two decades, Dr. Holovati has continually demonstrated her commitment to excellence in biomanufacturing, cell therapy, and medical laboratory initiatives. Her dedication to these fields is evident through her involvement in various national and international committees, including the American Association of Blood Banks Cell Therapy Standards Committee, Health Canada Lymphohematopoietic Cells Standards Committee, International Society for Cell Therapy Lab Practice Committee, and the Canadian Society for Transfusion Medicine Education Committee.
A History of Collaboration with ICCBBA
Dr. Holovati's journey with ICCBBA began in 2016, initially as a member and later taking on roles of increasing responsibility within the organization. She served as the chair of the (NATTAG) and contributed her expertise to the ICCBBA Standards Committee. Her active involvement and leadership within ICCBBA highlight her dedication to advancing ISBT 128 standards and best practices in blood banking automation.
In addition to her impressive professional accomplishments, Dr. Holovati is deeply committed to education, accreditation, policy development, and governance within her field. Her multidimensional approach to improving standards and practices ensures the delivery of safe and effective medical services to patients worldwide.

About ICCBBA:
ICCBBA is the international standards organization responsible for the management and development of the ISBT 128 Standard.
The acronym ISBT was originally derived from the important role played by the International Society of Blood Transfusion in the development of the standard. Today it expands as Information Standard for Blood and Transplant. The number 128 reflects the 128 characters of the ISO/IEC 646 7-bit character set.
The acronym ICCBBA is derived from the International Council for Commonality in Blood Banking Automation.
