It is ICCBBA's mission to enhance the safety and quality of healthcare through globally harmonized information and identification standards. With this goal in mind, ICCBBA is looking to contract with a talented and qualified person to be our Development Officer in India for the coming two years and advocate for the ISBT 128 Standard in the region.
ICCBBA is the global not-for-profit, nongovernmental organization that enhances safety for patients and augments efficiency for professionals by developing and maintaining the ISBT 128 international information standard for coding, labelling, and terminology of transfusion, transplantation, and/or administration of MPHO. The ISBT 128 Standard and its associated data structures are essential elements in ensuring the unambiguous traceability of MPHO from donor to patient and vice versa. Qualifications and Requirements
Medical and/or blood banking background: An individual with training in transfusion medicine, haematology, or a related medical specialty is strongly preferred.
Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of the blood transfusion sector in India, including its regulatory landscape and operational challenges. Knowledge of other related sectors is an advantage.
ISBT 128 Knowledge: Familiarity with ISBT 128 standards is highly desirable. Supplementary training will be provided if needed to equip the person with a deeper knowledge of the Standard. Knowledge of other healthcare information specifications and standards is an advantage.
Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage and educate diverse audiences. The ideal candidate should have strong communication skills to convey complex concepts in clear, non-technical language to diverse stakeholders, including healthcare professionals and regulators. They should be proficient in both written and verbal communication and capable of drafting professional outreach materials and delivering engaging presentations. The candidate must communicate accurately and consistently, recognizing when to refer technical inquiries to subject matter experts to maintain credibility.
Networking Abilities: Demonstrated experience in building relationships and networks with stakeholders in the healthcare sector, including professional associations such as ISTM and governmental bodies like NBTC.
Organizational Skills: Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
Travel Readiness: Willingness and ability to travel extensively within India and occasionally abroad.
Position Overview
The role will involve active engagement with key professional associations in India, including but not limited to the Indian Society of Transfusion Medicine (ISTM), the Indian Society of Blood Transfusion & Immunohematology (ISBTI), the Indian Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (ISHBT), Indian Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (ISBMT), the Indian Red Cross Society, the Federation of Indian Blood Donor Organizations (FIBDO), and national and state regulatory bodies including the National Blood Transfusion Council (NBTC), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) and the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO).
This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the enhancement of healthcare practices in India by supporting the standardisation of medical products of human origin information through ISBT 128. The ideal candidate will have medical training (preferably as a physician), a strong knowledge of the blood transfusion field in India, and excellent communication skills.
Key Responsibilities
Promote ISBT 128 Standards: Advocate for the adoption of ISBT 128 among stakeholders, primarily in the blood transfusion community, followed by other medical products of human origin, e.g., cell therapy.
Stakeholder Engagement: Identify and establish relationships with key stakeholders, including blood centers and similar facilities, healthcare professionals, software vendors, regulators, relevant professional associations, and others.
Network Development: Build and sustain a network of stakeholders to facilitate knowledge-sharing and collaboration. Represent ICCBBA at relevant meetings, conferences, and events within India and occasionally abroad to promote ISBT 128.
Awareness building: Provide information on ISBT 128 to various audiences, tailoring the approach to meet the specific needs of different groups.
Reporting and Collaboration: Regularly report on progress, challenges, and opportunities to ICCBBA management. Collaborate with ICCBBA teams to align efforts and support global initiatives.
The Development Officer (India) is responsible for promoting the adoption and implementation of the ISBT 128 Standard in India by actively engaging with stakeholders involved in the therapeutic application of medical products of human origin, including blood, cells, and tissues. Key stakeholders include healthcare professionals, information technology systems developers, and regulatory authorities. Engagement occurs through various channels, including conferences, meetings, on-site visits, and other outreach initiatives.

About ICCBBA:
ICCBBA is the international standards organization responsible for the management and development of the ISBT 128 Standard.
The acronym ISBT was originally derived from the important role played by the International Society of Blood Transfusion in the development of the Standard. Today it expands as Information Standard for Blood and Transplantation. The number 128 reflects the 128 characters of the ISO/IEC 646 7-bit character set.
The acronym ICCBBA is derived from the International Council for Commonality in Blood Banking Automation.
