Introducing Dr. Shivanand Kumatagi, our new ICCBBA Development Officer - India!

Dr. Kumatagi is a Transfusion Medicine professional based in Karnataka, India, with experience in blood centers, apheresis, and cellular therapy units. In his new role, he will focus on raising awareness through education and supporting stakeholders across India in the implementation of the ISBT 128 Standard.

"As a representative of ICCBBA in India," says Dr. Kumatagi, "I will work sincerely in adopting ISBT 128 standards among stakeholders of Medical Products of Human Origin (MPHO) with special focus on blood centers, cellular therapy units, and tissue banks. I'm looking forward to this exciting new role."

Dr. Kumatagi is the first to serve in ICCBBA's newly established Development Officer role. These two-year term positions are designed to promote the adoption of the ISBT 128 Standard in key regions around the world and to enhance the safety and quality of healthcare through globally harmonized information and identification standards.

The acronym ISBT was originally derived from the important role played by the International Society of Blood Transfusion in the development of the standard. Today, it expands as Information Standard for Blood and Transplant. The number 128 reflects the 128 characters of the ISO/IEC 646 7-bit character set.

The acronym ICCBBA is derived from the International Council for Commonality in Blood Banking Automation.
